Temporomandibular Joint Disorder treatment

Pain in chewing muscles or in the joint area, “clicks” when opening and closing teeth jaws, headaches, mouth opening limitations are symptoms associated with temporomandibular structure (TMD) problems.

The most common causes can be bruxism, loss of teeth, occlusion problems and orthodontic problems. If your teeth fit against each other in the wrong way, they can get damaged, break, get moving, and lose supporting tissue. Also, degenerative or rheumatoid arthritis causes dysfunction in the TMD.

Treatment

Possible ways to deal with TMD dysfunctions are simple counseling, anti-inflammatory therapy or night mouth guards, kinesiotherapy and physiotherapy. Also, replacing missing teeth and repairing abrasions, as well as correcting existing dental work.

Many patients with extensive prosthetic work may require pre-treatment occlusal guards to properly locate the position of the mandible and to protect porcelain after treatment.
